This is a mysterious and atmospheric tale set in north Pembrokeshire and the industrial districts of South Wales in the Victorian era. In the year 1810, following Martha’s return from voluntary exile on the Isle of Skomar, a black man is shipwrecked on the shore of the island. He dies from his injuries, but two strange and powerful objects find their way into Martha’s hands. Shortly afterwards, she meets a freed black slave, and she agrees to become involved in a secretive anti-slavery movement. At first all goes well, but then things run out of control as she desperately tries to stop a brutal campaign aimed, ironically, at her own enemies. Inexorably she is drawn into a shadowy world inhabited by politicians, aristocrats and assassins -- and it emerges that the security of the state itself is at risk. This is a tightly constructed tale with many unexpected twists and turns. It was written and produced in 2006 as a response to many requests from readers for background information on the people, places, social history, symbolism, and traditions featured in the stories. It includes personal material relating to the inspiration behind the stories, Brian's writing process, and the practicalities of self-publishing historical fiction. There is a section condensing all the story-lines, a full character list, and a list of all the diary entries in the first five novels. The book was intended for those who have their own theories about what is what, why people behave as they do, what the links are between the stories, and what interpretations might be placed upon certain associations and events in the heroine's life. The author also sees the book as an attempt to remove some of the mystique that might be associated with the process of writing fiction, and he aims to set up a three-way dialogue between Mistress Martha, the author, and the reader.
